How an eruption is confirmed
An increase in volcanic tremor or a new thermal hotspot can indicate changing conditions, but neither signal alone is an official confirmation. Confirmation normally comes from direct observations and communications issued by INGV or the competent authorities.
Etna can produce summit explosions, lava fountains, lava flows and ash emissions. Their effects differ significantly, especially for hiking access and aviation.
What visitors and travellers should check
For mountain access, follow civil-protection restrictions and licensed guides. For flights, consult Catania Airport and your airline even when an ash advisory is present, because a VONA colour code does not automatically mean that the airport is closed.
