Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation: the notice INGV sends to aviation when Etna's activity changes. The colour describes the volcano, not the airport.
Green: volcano in normal state. Yellow: activity above background level. Orange: heightened activity or eruption with little ash. Red: eruption with significant ash emission.
The European centre that tracks volcanic ash clouds with satellites and publishes where they are aloft, now and in the following 6, 12 and 18 hours.
The VAAC's numbered bulletin. During an event a new one is normally issued every six hours, with observation and forecasts.
Aircraft altitude in hundreds of feet: FL200 is about 6 km, FL350 about 10.7 km. The ash cloud is described by altitude bands.
