What a NASA FIRMS hotspot means
A hotspot is a satellite detection of unusually high surface temperature within a pixel. On Etna it may be related to lava or hot eruptive material, but fires, industrial heat and measurement artefacts are also possible.
The Fire Radiative Power value estimates radiant energy. It should be interpreted with the hotspot location, confidence, time and independent observations.
Limits of satellite monitoring
Cloud can hide the ground, and a satellite only observes the volcano during an overpass. No hotspot therefore does not prove that no activity exists. Use the map together with webcams, tremor and official bulletins.

Does every hotspot show lava?
No. A hotspot marks thermal radiation and needs confirmation from location, imagery and other monitoring sources.
Why are no hotspots visible during reported activity?
Cloud cover, satellite timing, sensor resolution or low thermal output may prevent detection.
Are the earthquake locations live?
They come from recent public seismic feeds. Processing and publication delays may apply.
