Unlike an individual earthquake, volcanic tremor is sustained vibration. Its amplitude may be influenced by fluid movement, degassing and eruptive processes. The absolute value depends on the station and processing method, so comparisons are most useful within the same time series.
A rapid increase deserves attention, but it is not a stand-alone eruption forecast. Wind, technical noise and station changes can also affect measurements.
How to interpret the live number
Look at the direction and duration of a change rather than a single reading. Then compare it with webcams, thermal hotspots, earthquakes and the latest INGV bulletins.
